By 1892, two of his watercolours had been early purchases by the National Gallery of Australia. He soon became an influential figure in the artistic life of Sydney and travelled widely. His work was exhibited in America and Europe. He lived in London for the first few years of the new century (when the present and following lot were painted) and exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy. He served in the Australian forces during World War One and was appointed an official Australian War Artist.
