188 A Minton Wellington Vase, finely painted probably by Thomas Steel with an octagonal panel of roses, a carnation, auriculas and other flowers on a ledge reserved on a Brunswick blue ground with flat and raised gilding by Thomas Till of birds, anthemion and scrolling foliage, the rams head handles, flared foot and square plinth also gilt, 30cm h, c1830 Literature: Godden (Geoffrey A), Minton Pottery & Porcelain of The First Period 1793-1850, 1968, col plt VI and plt 114. Minton's Wellington Vase appears as shape No 11 in the Factory's Design Book. Thomas Steel was the most accomplished English fruit and flower painter on porcelain of the 1830s. He had earlier worked at the Derby and Rockingham factories. Till's name often appears in the Minton Estimate Book in connection with raised gilding such as is found on the best Minton porcelain of the period (Godden, op cit, p127). £500-700
