707 Attributed to Guiseppe Marchi (c1721-1808) PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN bust length in Van Dyck costume, 52.5 x 46cm From the time Marchi was brought back from Italy in 1752 by Sir Joshua Reynolds, PRA he worked as his principal assistant except for short periods in Wales in the late 1760s. Here he painted members of his friend and fellow artist, Thomas Jones's family. In the early 1780s he worked at Swansea £500-700 Relined in the mid 20th century and with some localised restoration. The background, particularly to the left of the head of a rather matt appearance, some further accretion of grime and dirt and consequent smoke yellowing of the varnish. 709 Thomas Whitcombe (1763-1824) SHIPS OFF CAPE TOWN signed (on a piece of driftwood lower left), 66.5 x 105cm A 'private' RN frigate arriving in Table Bay between 1795-1801, exchanging salute with a departing flag officer, possibly whoever was on the Cape station - a Vice Admiral of the White in a two-decker, probably a 74 at that time but possibly smaller. Almost certainly painted for the captain of the frigate. £5000-7000 Relined,probably in the late 19th or very early 20th century and with some localised old restoration. The varnish now heavily yellowed, some mild cracqueleur. In giltwood and composition cavetto frame with on the reverse the printed label of James Stanley Johnston Portland Street.... sea

She was owned by Roberts, Owen & Co from 1913 to 1917 and once sailed from England (Prawle Point) to South Australia (Port Pirie) in 66 days. £300-500 Some surface grime and in need of cleaning, a few minor scratches here and there but in good and entirely unrestored condition, in contemporary ebonised frame

731 Martin Frank Stainforth (1866-1957) PORTRAIT OF TWO HORSES AT AN OPEN GATE signed, dated 10.27 and inscribed Ranksborough Gorse, signed again, dated 3-4-28 and inscribed Painted for Owen H Smith Esq Old Langham Hall, Langham, Rutland, further inscribed on the selvedge "This painting must not be varnished before the end of July MS 3.4.28", 62 x 88cm The artist was born at Martley, Worcestershire and after training as an engraver and illustrator emigrated to Australia in 1908. He quickly established a reputation as a painter of racehorses for prominent owners, including King George V. He later spent 15 years in New York where he painted many famous American horses. Stainforth returned to England after World War Two. Mr Owen Hugh Smith, JP (1869-1958) of Langham Rutland bred pedigree Red Poll cattle and Suffolk Punches at his model farm beneath Ranksborough Hill. £3000-4000 In fine, untouched condition, the varnish yellowed with time, no holes, tears, damage or repairs, the work has not been relined and is on the original stretchers. In the original Flemish style ebonised, ripple moulded frame with losses caused by the affects of damp
