Professor Douglas Walton

Douglas Walton was brought up in East London and became interested in Aircraft and Aviation by the age of eight.  As a teenager he learnt to fly gliders and joined Chingford Model Flying Club, mainly flying combat models.  He studied Aeronautical Engineering at Loughborough University and after graduating was employed at RAE Farnborough carrying out research in aircraft landing gear.  He was awarded a PhD by Bristol University for his work.  Despite having survived a midair collision as a teenager he went on to serve as a pilot in the RAF VT for four years.  Doug worked on the design of civil nuclear power stations before joining Birmingham University as a Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering Design in 1977.  After becoming a Senior Lecturer he was made Professor in 1992.  He is now Emeritus Professor of Mechanical Engineering researching non-metallic gears and rotary engines.

His worldwide collection of over 60 model aircraft and 850 model aircraft engines includes vintage spark ignition and diesel engines.  He has lectured and demonstrated model engines in museums and halls across the UK.

THE DOGGIE HUBBARD COLLECTION

Clifford L B Hubbard, F.I.A.L, ABA (1913-2000) invariably known affectionately as

‘Doggie’ was the leading authority on the literature of the dog.  His encyclopaedic knowledge, enthusiastically shared with collectors for over 50 years, made him a well-known and popular figure in both the dog and antiquarian book worlds.

A diligent bibliographer and voracious collector, he sought and usually obtained often over many years (‘doggedly’ searching for!) most, if not all editions of a title, variations, signed or association copies, ephemera and photographs.

His published works include The Observer’s Book of Dogs (1945) and Dogs in Britain (Macmillan 1948).  His unpublished Bibliography of the Dog begun in the 1940s was indispensable to Gwyne-Jones, who published his own in 1971.  Even by then ‘Doggie’ had a formed a collection of 6000 books, which included many rare titles not in the British Library.  Shortly before his death he gave his collection, which had increased to 25,000 items to the National Library of Wales.  This sale of what remained in his possession represents the only opportunity to acquire a memento of the famous collector.

He also formed a remarkable group of editions (including the very rare first) of Sarah Catherine Martin’s creation and his namesake, Old Mother Hubbard.  This ‘unknown’ collection within a collection, formed on a whim but with typical thoroughness reveals much about ‘Doggie’.  His unmarried mother had been a schoolteacher in a small town in rural West Wales.  Despite the scandal and shame which prevailed at that time and which resulted in her leaving the locality,   ‘Doggie’ was not a judgmental character.  He saw no stigma in his illegitimacy and never concealed the fact.  Perhaps Old Mother Hubbard (“who “had so many children”) would have been proud!
