1008-1012: Marcel Breuer Furniture from The Gane House
One of the masters of modernism, Breuer arrived in England in October 1935, one year after Walter Gropius. Between then and his leaving for the USA in autumn 1937 his fully realised schemes included furniture designs for Jack Pritchard's Isokon Company, a living room in Heals' Seven Architects exhibition organised by Maxwell Fry and the installation of the Ventris apartment in the Highpoint Building (by Lubetkin and Tecton). His most ambitious work was the remodelling of the Bristol home of Grofton Gane, the director of P E Gane Ltd., manufacturers of traditional and modern furniture. Gane was a champion of modern design in England, a member of the Design & Industries Association and retailer of both Isokon and Artek furniture. Breuer also designed the seminal open-plan Gane Pavilion at the Royal Agricultural Show, Bristol in 1936, a building that heralded his work in the United States. The Gane House contained a large number of pieces of specially designed furniture made in Gane's factory and he promoted the ideal of a house that was "both comfortable and modern". In achieving this, Breuer wrote (in Design for To-Day) that "My work was supported by Mr Gane himself with such understanding and decision that I could not wish for better." The results was "one of the most striking new interiors in England, and a significant work in Breuer's career" (Wilk).

Primary-sourced examples of Breuer's iconic pre War English furniture of impeccable provenance are seldom offered for sale (lots 1008 - 1012; see also lot 329A)
