A RARE GARNITURE OF DERBY VASES AND COVERS
of two handled, inverted baluster or shouldered form, the high or low domed covers encrusted with red and gilt flowers and a prominent bud, finely painted with panels of classical figures, the reverse with similar panels of birds, the flanking vases with subsidiary reserves of butterflies and moths to the flared neck, all framed in elaborate gilt C scrolls and flowers reserved on an intense mazarine blue ground, 25 and 31cm h, c1760
These and the several other recorded Derby garnitures represent some of the factory's finest productions at this period. Although owing an obvious debt to contemporary Chelsea, it seems probable that they were painted at Derby as the painting, especially of the birds, is characteristic. See Twitchett (J), Derby Porcelain, p48, plt 27 and Rice (D G), Derby Porcelain, The Golden Years, p157, plt 132.
A similar garniture was sold, Bonhams, 8 March 2006, lot 69.
Estimate: 3000-4000

Large vase, several minor descending hairline cracks, probably firing cracks in the neck, old restoration to the top scroll of one of the handles, typical but relatively minor chipping of one or two of the encrusted flowers, etc. Pair of flanking vases, one with old restoration to the top scroll of one of the handles as with the larger vase also on the underside of the foot a minor chip which is not normally noticeable and was a manufacturing flaw being glazed over at the time. One or two of the flowers and petals slightly chipped, covers of smaller vases with restoration but in summary in excellent overall condition and entirely free from substantial flaws or restoration, ie free from extensive body cracks, the handles unbroken, etc
