A VERY FINE INDIAN EMBROIDERED PALAMPORE, GUJARAT
the undyed cotton ground finely embroidered in vivid silk thread with tulips, carnations and other flowers on sinuous stems with leaves, 264 x 163cm, fringed, early/mid 18th c
First imported into Europe by the Portuguese in the 16th century, the trade in Gujarati embroideries was continued by the HEIC (East India Company). Particularly esteemed during the 18th century was the work of the professional embroiderers of Cambay (Khambhat) Alexander Hamilton recorded that they "embroider the best of any people in India, perhaps the world" (A New Account of the East Indies, 1825). The Company's factors were particularly requested to procure "quilts and carpets of all sorts made about Cambaya and other places", such materials to be of "calicoe, embroydered and sundrie silks" (India Office Archives, Factory Records Miscellaneous, vol 25, p10.) A Palampore of c1730-40 with similar flowers, thought to be made possibly for the Dutch market on account of the presence of tulips, is illustrated Barnes (R), S Cohen and R Crill, Trade Temple and Court Indian Textiles from The Tapi Collection, Mumbai 2002, p101. One of a set of curtains similar to the present lot, is illustrated Synge (L), Art of Embroidery, Woodbridge 2001, plt 308.
Provenance: probably acquired by Isoline Tate, who was particularly interested in embroidery. She was related to Sir Henry Tate, 1st Baronet (1819-1899) the sugar magnate and married Thomas Gee; thence by decent to the present vendor.
Estimate: 10000-15000

Some old stains in places but please verify by first hand inspection; the fringe and tassels of later date, the yellow silk backing probably 18th c
