899-903: A collection of Paintings and drawings by Professor Maurice William Partridge (1913-1973)
Bill Partridge was an eminent professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry who, it can fairly be claimed, deserves to be taken seriously as an inventive and original painter of the British School of the mid 20th century. He was also a dicerning collector of English watercolours, regularly making forays to London to buy on behalf of Nottingham University, but also acquiring drawings for himself very much in the tradition of artist-collectors. The influence of the English neo-romantic painters- Sutherland, Piper and perhaps also Ivan Hitchens and Roger Hilton is stronger in his work of the 50s and early 60s before Abstraction is powerfully asserted, but never completely so, in his later pictures. Partridge exhibited with the Midland Group from 1955 to 1969. His work was included in the 1966 Whitechapel Art Gallery's 'Pictures for Schools' Exhibition and also shown in Hampstead, Cambridge, Swansea and elsewhere. A Memorial Exhibition was staged at Nottingham University Art Gallery in 1973. Partridge was born in Lincoln in 1913, his forebears of Lincolnshire farming stock. He spent his entire career in the Midlands being appointed a Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Nottingham where he held the Jesse Boot Chair of Pharmaceutical Chemistry. He also served the Committee on the Safety of Medicines.
