The Wynnes of Voelas and Cefnamwlch are amongst the most ancient families of North Wales deriving ultimately from Marchweithian of the 11th century, one of the founders of the noble tribes of Wales.  He was a lord of the greater part of the Vale of Clwyd and the country about the lower Aled, between Denbigh and Llanrwst.  In the late 15th century a descendant, ‘Rhys Fawr’ so called because of his great stature, became famous when he was entrusted by Henry VII with the Royal standard of England at the Battle of Bosworth Field after the death of Sir William Brandon.  He received from King Henry VII the augmentation of the Rose of Lancaster and the lions paw borne in his crest.  His grandson Cadwaladr was granted Voelas by Henry VIII in 1545.  His descendant Jane Wynne (1747-1811) married in 1778 the Hon. Charles Finch, second son of Heneage Finch, 3rd Earl of Aylesford and grandson of Charles 6th  Duke of Somerset.  The ancient rambling house in which they lived was replaced in the 1860s.  This house was in turn replaced in 1958 by Clough Williams-Ellis’ present neo-classical mansion.

THE VOELAS LINENS

A note on provenance

The extensive group of armorial linen damask banqueting and tablecloths and napkins (lots 855-869) display the arms of Wynne impaling Hildyard.  This is in consequence of the marriage in May 1812 of Charles Wynn Griffith-Wynne, MP (1780-1865) of Voelas (or Foelas) Denbighshire and Sarah, daughter of the Reverend Henry Hildyard of Stokesley, Yorkshire.  The linen, which may not have all been supplied at the same time, could have been ordered for the coming of age of their son and heir, Charles Wynne-Finch in 1836 or on the occasion of his marriage in 1840 or second marriage in 1863.  In any event it has remained at the house until removed for the present sale.

All sizes are approximate as denoted by an asterisk.
